Teachable Moments - Part 1 Take the time
Sunday morning are usually packed full with getting the kids ready, eating breakfast, and getting to church on time. But with the time change this week, we had a little more time since our bodies didn't get the message about the time change and we all got up a little early. The easy way to fill that extra time for the kids while Mommy and Daddy relax for a few minutes would be to turn on the TV for them. But something exciting happened in our house. When asked if they wanted to watch a show, the kids informed Daddy that they were talking about God!
Daddy asked if he could join in the talk with them, and Sister said, "Sure!"
The conversation moved from where does Jesus live, to why don't we want to go to hell, and what is sin, to finally how we can get to heaven. That was the point that our four year old got distracted and started talking about ways Jesus could take us to heaven. Her ideas included using and elevator, a helicopter, airplane, or maybe a rocket "cause it can fly really high." But we still enjoyed a profitable time like in Deuteronomy 6:7 to "teach [the word] diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house..."
Neither of our kids fully comprehends what salvation means yet; but if we keep taking advantage of the opportunities to talk about it, they will soon be ready and we may have the privilege to pray with them as they ask Jesus into their hearts. What a joy for any parent to be able to lead their child to Jesus.
Do you take the time with your child to talk about salvation, even if they seem to not fully understand. The Bible says in John 4:37, "And herein is that saying true , One soweth , and another reapeth." And in Isaiah 55:11, "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please , and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Continue to share the gospel with your own children, and claim God's promises that it will bear fruit in their lives.

I love it! It is such a gift to teach our children about Jesus. Just yesterday, we had a choral song playing in the van called "He Gave Everything". My son (5 years) said, "Mommy, did Jesus really give EVERYTHING? ...even His STOVE?" We had a wonderful, instructive conversation about Christ the rest of the way to church! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing! Last year on the way home from our churches kids club I decided to talk to my oldest about salvation instead of listening to the radio or calling my mom. We had a great conversation about it and that night he accepted Christ as his Savior!
